NFL ROSTER EDITOR 3.0 Instructions NFL Roster Editor 3.0 offers many features that I will briefly describe here. You may view On-line help by typing "help" at the TEAM SCREEN prompt. This will bring up help charts on all the commands you may use in the program. All deluxe package registered users will receive a much more comprehensive instruction manual which will also include helpful tips. Please read README.1ST and REGISTER.FRM if you haven't all ready. This file, README.TXT, is an instructions file that briefly describes all of the program features. The information presented here should provide you with enough knowledge to operate the program. The best way to learn and become comfortable with the program is to use and practice the commands, so go ahead and dig in! Program Overview ---------------- The program can be basically divided into 3 areas: TEAM SCREEN SEARCH SCREEN POOL SCREEN The TEAM SCREEN is accessed off the main menu where you may enter various commands to view or modify a team roster. TEAM SCREEN commands will be discussed below. The SEARCH SCREEN is accessed by using any of the find (or search) commands that you enter at the TEAM SCREEN command prompt. Commands entered on the SEARCH SCREEN are accessed by using a key combination. All key combinations are listed at the bottom of all screens. SEARCH SCREEN commands will be discussed below. The POOL SCREEN is accessed when the view pool command is used at the TEAM SCREEN command prompt. The only commands you can use here are to return to the TEAM SCREEN or "C" to continue viewing the Pool. Program Syntax -------------- All commands entered at the TEAM SCREEN Command Prompt must be entered exactly as listed below and in the help screens. For example, to use the name command, "name" must be typed and not "NAME" or "Name". TEAM SCREEN Commands -------------------- When you start the program select a team by typing its corresponding number. This will bring you to that teams TEAM SCREEN Command Prompt. An example would be "---Eagles--->?". At this prompt you may enter various commands to view or edit player records. On-line help for the TEAM SCREEN is provided on the first help screen. A description of each command is listed below. open ---- This command is entered alone with no options. You will then be prompted for the record information for that player. In order, you must enter a flag, Position, Type, Name, and Comment. You may leave any field blank if you wish. Please note that a flag can only be one character. Also, if you want to use the advanced comment feature, you should enter the comment in the proper way. A fictional comment example follows: 03-d.01-1985 UCLA In this example the player is in his 3rd year (03), was drafted 1st (d.01) in 1985 and played at the college UCLA. It's important to use this format if you will be using the Utilities that are included with the Registered Versions of the program. All of the parts of the comment are self-explanatory except the second part (d.01). This needs some additional explanation. The first character "d" represents how he came to the team (d=draft). Other examples include f=free agent and w=waivers. The .01 part represents which round he was drafted in. This will only appear with "d" as in "d.01". If "f" or "w" is used, the remaining 3 spaces represent what team he came from. For example a comment that uses "f" follows: 06-fDAL-1991 Ohio State When you use the player pool functions of the program, the second section will automatically be updated for you. In the above example, the player was signed as a free agent from Dallas. See the pool commands below for more information about the comment field. When you are finished entering records, enter the word "done" at the flag entry prompt. This will close the team file and take you back to the TEAM SCREEN. pool ---- Enter this command to access the player pool. You will be prompted for a Search String for the program to look for. The string can be any series of characters in the record of the player you are seeking. For example, you could use a last name "Smith", a partial last name "Mc" or a college "UCLA". When the program has a match you are given the option to sign the player or pass and continue searching. If you decide to sign the player, you will be asked if you wish to use the advanced comment feature. If the answer is No, the player will be transferred to the team without any modification to the comment. If the answer is YES, you will be given a menu of signing types. For example: "f" "w" "t". Enter one of these letters and the player will be transferred with an updated comment that will have the signing designation and previous team in the comment. For example if John Doe last played for New Orleans and is being signed by San Francisco as a free agent, answer Yes to the advanced comment feature and type "f" at the next prompt. John Doe's comment might look something like this: 07-fNO -1993 Penn State When the search is completed, you will be returned to the TEAM SCREEN. vpool ----- Enter this command to view the Player Pool. print ----- Enter this command to print the roster of the team. delete (rec#) ------------- Enter this command to delete a record by specifying it's number. You must know the record number of the player to use this command. The record number is required. An example would be "delete 21" modify (rec#) ------------- Enter this command to modify an existing record. You must specify the record number with the modify command (the record number is required). An example would be "modify 11". When you enter the command you are taken to the record input screen for that player. If you want to keep any field the same (no change), use the "]" character. exit ---- Enter this command to exit the TEAM SCREEN and return to the main menu. FIND COMMANDS ------------- The remaining commands are used to specify the search method you wish to use. The 4 command types are flag, type, position and name. If you want to search all teams you must use the universal option of that command. To do this put a "@" in front of the command (@flag, @type, @position, @name). Only the universal commands and the name command require and option. Inotherwords, the flag, type, and position command do not need an option and may be entered alone. The purpose of the find commands is to display a set of records that you wish to view. After a find command is executed, you will be taken to the SEARCH SCREEN. SEARCH SCREEN Commands ---------------------- The SEARCH SCREEN is only displayed after a successful search is done using one of the find commands. Many of the commands you can use at the SEARCH SCREEN has an equivalent at the TEAM SCREEN. All search screen commands are entered by pressing a key or key combination. The SEARCH SCREEN help is listed on the second screen of on-line help. a description of each key command is listed below. ------- Equivalent to the MODIFY command of the TEAM SCREEN. You will be prompted for the record number to modify. -------- Pressing the key is equivalent to the OPEN command of the TEAM SCREEN. and --------------------- Pressing this key will scroll the records backwards and forwards. --- By pressing a character (Capital), you will be paged to the record beginning with that letter. How the command functions depends upon which find command was used. Consult the on-line help for additional information. ------- Equivalent to the POOL command of the TEAM SCREEN. ------- Use this key combination to toggle printing on and off. If printing is set to "on", the characters "PRN" will be displayed on the help bar. If "PRN" is set to "on" when you leave the SEARCH SCREEN, the information will be printed. -------- Equivalent to the DELETE command of the TEAM SCREEN. You will be prompted for the record number to delete. ----- Press to exit the SEARCH SCREEN and return to the TEAM SCREEN. -David B.
